7th Asia-Europe Roundtable Experts Workshop, 20th until 21st May 2010 in Singapore: Early Warning Systems in Minority Conflicts |
Minority issues remain at the heart of most intrastate conflicts and in spite of the advances made in developing Early Warning Systems (EWS) for armed conflict, many experts believe that the existing frameworks and mechanisms lack the provisions to specifically prevent the outbreak of ethno-political conflicts. Ten experts from Asia and Europe will attend the 7th Asia-Europe Roundtable Workshop in Singapore to develop a regional early warning framework that would not only draw attention to the impending outbreak of minority conflicts but also compel the relevant players to act towards preventing such a conflict.
The Asia-Europe Roundtable (AER) was launched in 2001 by the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF), Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Office for Regional Cooperation in Asia and Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) and has become an important forum for experts in international relations in general and in conflict management in particular. Since 2003, the AER has focussed on the theme of peace and security in Asia and Europe. Our 3rd Roundtable held in Hanoi, Vietnam looked at post-conflict peace-building and reconciliation. The 4th AER, held in 2005 in Berlin, Germany, sharpened its focus on conflict prevention and the 5th Roundtable explored the issue of building democracy for sustainable peace and development through post-conflict reconstruction.. The 6th AER which met in 2009 in Derry, Northern Ireland, and in Letterkenny, Ireland, focused its attention to the issue of minority conflicts.
