The foundation's presence in Singapore dates back over a period of more than 25 years. During that time, it has focused mainly on activities in mass media and communication. The Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) was established with the support of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the Singapore Government and UNESCO in 1971. It is now located at the School of Communication Studies, Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
In 1995, the Singapore office was transformed into an Office for Regional Cooperation in Southeast Asia and by 2009 its regional activities stretchs over all Asia. Its role is to give support, in close co-operation with the country offices in the region, in following areas:
The regional and international orientation of our work implies the necessity of involving policy makers in our partner countries as well as representatives of scientific and social institutions with a focus on regional and foreign policy questions. Apart from independent contacts, established through our FES country offices, we have working relationships with the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta and the ASEAN Institutes for International and Strategic Studies (ASEAN-ISIS), in particular the 'Singapore Institute of International Affairs' (SIIA) and the 'Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace' (CICP) in Cambodia.
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung has also started working relationships with the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) in Singapore. Together with ASEF and SIIA the FES has organized the Asia-Europe Roundtable since 2001.
In the realm of socio-political issues, the FES has established good communication channels with the regional office of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its country offices. In the field of trade union cooperation, the FES has is a close working relationship with the Regional Organisation of the International Trade Union Confederation for Asia and the Pacific (ITUC AP), the regional International Trade Secretariats (Global Unions) as well as the Singapore National Trade Union Congress (NTUC).
