The foundation's presence in Singapore dates back over a period of more than 25 years. During that time, it has focused mainly on activities in mass media and communication. The Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC) was established with the support of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the Singapore Government and UNESCO in 1971. It is now located at the School of Communication Studies, Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung's Office for Regional Cooperation in Asia focuses on reinforcing social justice as a key factor for inclusive growth and as a core element of political processes in Asia. Through its project work in Asia, it cooperates with its partners aiming at strengthening democratic governance and incorporating features of social justice in political and economic processes.
The Office for Regional Cooperation in Asia also coordinates the Regional Trade Union Programme of FES in Asia. In the past few years, FES has actively supported dialogue platforms and multi-stakeholder processes for trade unions and civil society organisations related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM). The aim is to establish inclusive and structured mechanisms for constructive stakeholder engagement on the regional and interregional level.
